Harmony of the Spheres: Music and Mythology

Explores the intrinsic relationship between music and belief. Beginning with “sacred numbers” from the natural universe that over thousands became revelations about the remarkable correspondences between calendar, mathematics, astronomy and music. Includes the earliest sacred counting of the Stone Age and the formalization of the art and science of music in the High Civilizations including Mesopotamia, India, Greece and China. This ancient belief system is repeated in Europe as the “Harmony of the Spheres.” As an optional two-part series, the topics will include how music is transmitted across cultures and time and the relationships between musical procedures and forms with structural anthropology. Each lecture is about 2 hours in length. For both lectures in a series, scheduling requires two days.
